Parent and Community Involvement
Parent and community engagement is key to student success. All parents, family and community members are invited to be involved in our school. We offer a variety of ways for interested individuals to support our students. Some examples include joining our parent organization, volunteer tutoring, chaperoning field trips, serving as a site council member and helping with school special events. Please contact us at the above number to learn more about getting involved with our school.
School Improvement Plan
Oakbrook Elementary had a goal for each of the following academic areas: Math, Literacy and Science. The staff at Oakbrook spent time in their Professional Learning community reviewing Common Core standards, narrowing down to the essential standards that all students need to know for each grade level. Staff used the pacing guides and the curriculum resources provided by the district to ensure students were able to have opportunities to show mastery on the essential standards. This school year, 2016-17, Oakbrook focused on unpacking the essential standards in math. Using Engage New York, teachers were able to design lessons that supported the essential standards. Teachers used the foundational skills and major cluster assessments to determine if the students mastered the standard. Oakbrook then focused time every day, hosting interventions and enrichments for the essential standards in math. Teachers spent PLC time, reviewing lessons, student growth and strategized on how to get all students to be successful.
The fourth goal supported the work of the Professional Practices needed to create powerful school communities, connecting to parents, students and to each other.
Many teachers were able to go to Solution Tree’s PLC’s at work. Teachers focused their work on tracking student growth, reflecting on the level of growth and implementing interventions or enrichments based that growth.
The Oakbrook staff continued to foster parent engagement through the Parent Action Team. One of the most important goals of the team was to build better systems for reciprocal communication with families. This year, the team designated room parents with a coordinator and set up a Friday backpack program to support families that needed food resources for the weekend.
